Why can’t you identify as anything? Identity doesn’t mean a thing! And I don’t believe that a monk could ever teach you how to leave your mind, ‘cuz you’re in there all the time. Yes, you can’t escape your mind. I know you never wanted anything more than you could keep within your hands. So, you go out in the land - ha! You can hardly stand! But, you saw it on a screen and you felt it in a dream, but you fell right back asleep. I know you’ll never do anything! Never go anywhere at all, not even to your hall, ‘cuz it’s scary out there beyond your safety lair. It’s risky outside, beyond your rotten mind. Why can’t you identify as anything? Identity doesn’t mean a thing! And I don’t believe that a monk could ever teach you how to leave your mind, ‘cuz you’re in there all the time. Yes, you can’t escape your mind. Identity doesn’t mean a thing! What else could I be? Anything but me. What else could you do? Anything but you. Well, that’s just how we act, and that’s just how we’ve followed our paths. And why can’t I see anything but my eyes? And why can’t you be what I want you to? And why aren’t we feeling happy? You could turn your back and walk away from me but I know you can’t walk away from you. And I could leave you too, but I’d be left with the things that I do.

Museums 01:44
You’ve got a choice to make: you could hold on to the past, protect it and try to make it last. Play some folk music, hold onto your traditions, and you could consider starting up a new museum with climate controlled vaults and the latest technologies in historic preservation science. And I know people give their lives for heritage, but from the perspective of Austrolapithicus it seems a bit ridiculous to save these vintage artefacts – they’re quaint and always good for a laugh until you need a scrap of paper. Use the back of the poster, or tear off a piece of the album cover. The last thing that we’d want to make is more artists. You don’t have to go back to the beginning to restart it. You told me that it’s not real but there was a time before you told me that stuff and now you’ve gone away and you’ll never come back. All we’ve got left is the memory of things that aren’t real.

Friends 04:09
Once, we were friends, but we cannot go back again to that place to save your face – there’s wrinkles hanging out all over the place, okay? When we were young, we frolicked in the summer sun and we did just whatever comes without much thought for anyone, but then we went out into the world – we learned there’s more than rainbow swirls. We sat down just to catch us up, but you did not want to hear about stuff. You know where I was made. I know where you were made. We know where we were made and it wasn’t in the darkest cave! Once, we were the same, but we cannot go back again 'cuz we grow and we change, but some of us just rearrange ourselves/the same old shit. You did it once, you did it twice and you did it again. You took the same pieces and then you combined to build the same monsters every time. Well, you said some mean things – I don’t know why – I told all my friends I’m done with that guy. Rest assured, you feel the same way about me – it’s better this way. ‘Cuz seasons change and leaves will fall. All I know is this love has all gone. Once, we were friends, but we cannot go back again, because we know where we were made and it wasn’t in the darkest cave. I knew you then and you know me now – we know that we can’t be pals. I’ve seen your worst and at my best, you and I cannot be friends. Another day is another case and a friend will cause our mind to change.

Follow It 03:09
I don’t know what it is! Just follow it. Don’t know what it is! Just follow it. Don’t know where it’s going either. Why’d I have to volunteer? There’s an arrow made out of leaves on the ground or maybe the breeze has turned it around. A rope is coming down the hallway. I can’t tell where it’s heading. Don’t know what it is, just follow it. Don’t know what it is, just follow it. If I’m not back in thirty, go get help and hurry. I don’t know what we’ll find out there. I don’t know much, but I know I’m scared. I never thought I’d be a believer! I never thought I’d catch that fear! Hey there, won’t you lend me your light, 'cuz the candle I’ve got is not very bright? And please stop shining that thing in my face, you’ve been waving your mirrors all over the place. Shadows moving there in the murky light. Shadows moving there in the murky light. Why’s it have to be so scary? Why’d you have to double dare me? Shadows moving there in the murky light. Was that a ghost or just my sight? There might be zombies or devils, spirits or mummies or werewolves. Just picture them all in their underwear. Just picture them all in their underwear. Be sure your laces are tied and there’s batteries in your light. It’s one foot in front of the other one. Put one foot in front of the other one. And on the count of four I’m gonna open up that door. Hey there, won’t you lend me your light, 'cuz the candle I’ve got is not very bright? And please stop shining that thing in my face. You’ve been waving your mirrors all over the place. One Two Three Four When you turn out that light, there’s no fright – it’s only night. And when you’re scared, please be aware there’s nothing there – it’s only air. And when you leave your past behind, don’t be afraid – it’s only time.

Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band, please can we borrow your gear, band? Please can we borrow your gear, band? Non-profit volunteers. We’ll ride our bikes to the show, 'cuz we don’t know if we’re gonna get paid. We never get paid. And we don’t wanna go home early because the bus stops at eleven thirty. And we don’t wanna tip the taxi. And we don’t wanna go and crash the car that you borrowed from your parents down the stairs. We’ve all been there. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band, please won’t you play in my band? Please won’t you play in my band? Non-profit volunteers. With people who will get along. We could each choose one of our songs, 'cuz you’ll pick the old and I’d write some new. I’ll give you one for just one or two. And I don’t know if I’m prepared to sing your songs, 'cuz that’d be weird. But maybe we could tour together! I’ll play in your band! You play in my band! Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band, we don’t need a place to jam. No, we don’t need no place to jam, we’re the non-profit volunteers! 'Cuz we just sing or sometimes hum. We don’t use amps and we don’t need drums. We’ll DI all our guitars. It’ll sound like shit when we play in bars. And when we’re at home, we’ll play into headphones, or even when we’re alone we’ll practice on the phone. Or we could just whisper into your mind. It’s all just a dream. This band is a lie. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band. Non-profit volunteer band.

There’s a psycho and she’s coming to get you, yes, and I know that I just don’t get you. Well I’ve been a police officer for seventeen years, patrolling these streets right here, trying to keep all the people safe from fear: the old people and the young people and the mothers and the fathers and the grandparents and the aunts and uncles and the families and the babies. And for the most part, I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job of serving and protecting and treating everything with respect – keeping them safe and happy. But the other day, the strangest thing happened. My boss called me in to his office and he said, “Listen up copper. Due to unanticipated budget cutbacks we’ve been forced to institute a new system around here. It’s called a quota. You’ve got to arrest at least fifteen people a week. And if you don’t, well: you don’t even want to know what’s gonna happen to you.” So I thought about for a second and I said, “Now you listen here, copper, I’ve been doing this job for a lot of years, and I know that a lot of these people we see out there aren’t really criminals. They’ve got all kinds of issues going on. They don’t need the cops. What they need is a doctor.” There’s a doctor and they’re coming to get you, yes, and I know that she just don’t get me. There’s a psycho and she’s out to get you, yes, and I know that he just don’t get you. Well I’m not really such a psycho, I’ll have you know. I’m just a little misunderstood. I just do things differently than how you think I should. Like the other day, I was walking down the street and I just thought I’d do a little dance. I was completely sober, just trying to express myself through some new kind of contemporary dance. And a cop came up to me and he said, “If you were on drugs, I would understand, but nobody just walks around doing a dance. We’re going to have to take you in.” And he put me in handcuffs and shoved me in the car and took me to a jail with padding and bars and he jammed a bunch of pills down my throat and told me not to worry and said now I’m healthy and I’ll never dance that way again. Well I’ve got to tell you, I’ve got some real problems with our contemporary medical system. You can’t just kidnap someone and drug them up and deny their personality like that. If it ever happens again, this is what I’m going to do: I’m going to get myself a lawyer and I’m going to sue you. There’s a lawyer and he’s coming to get you, yes, and I know that she just don’t get you. There’s a doctor and she’s out to get you, yes, and I know that she just don’t get me. There’s a psycho and he’s coming to me, yes, and I know that they just don’t get you. Well I’ve been a family doctor for seventeen years. I’ve got a nice little practice in this quiet suburban strip mall here. And generally, things have been pretty darn good. I help all the people in my neighbourhood, like lawyers and police officers and their babies and their families – whoever needs my help, really. But I’ve got this one patient that I don’t know what to do with. They come in every week to refill their prescriptions, and of course they have to wait in the waiting room for a reasonable amount of time. But recently I started looking in there after they’ve gone. And when they leave, I look in, and every single time without fail there’s some new graffiti written all over the walls. With permanent marker, they’ve written stuff like: “I hate doctors!” “Doctors suck!” “Go home, doctors!” “Doctors? Fuck!” I’m trying to help you here! You’re just like everyone else. I don’t know why you’ve gotta go and trash the place or what you think your problem is. I don’t know what your problem is, but I don’t know if I can help a psycho like this. If it happens again, I swear I’m going to call the police. There’s a copper and I’m coming to get me, yes, and I know that you just don’t get me. There’s a doctor and he’s out to get you, yes, and I know that they just don’t get you. There’s a lawyer and he’s coming to get me, yes, and I know that she just don’t get me. There’s a psycho and she’s out to get you, yes, and I know that they just don’t get you. There’s a copper and they’re out to get me, yes, and I know that they just don’t get me. There’s a lawyer and they’re coming to get me, yes, and I know that you just don’t get me. There’s a doctor and they’re coming to do you, yes, and I know that we’re out to screw you. There’s a psycho and we’re out to get you, yes, and I know that we just don’t get you.

You’ll never find a land before time. Well, you could try, but it’ll take longer than a life. This place is fine – I think you simply like to whine, and so you leave. You’re carrying your disease, while back at home, the things you left all on their own will grow and grow while you just ebb and flow and flow, and in your mind, there’s nothing could be more right. Guess what? It’s not, 'cuz there’s a duty you have got. We’re walking with our eyes closed, but we know where we want to go. Take a step and hope it’s right. Left or right or roll the dice. When we find we’re in the place and time we want to be we’ll know because we’ll feel oooooooooooooo. If you believe whatever will be will be will be, you’ll never make the things inside your brain. It’s just a thought – a little more than a want. It’s in the air – well, air’s just everywhere but out in space, somewhere beyond the rushing race. Down in the earth – we’ll get there too but first we’ve got live. We’ve got to take a little risk, so take a step: the right and then the left. We’re walking with our eyes closed, but we know where we want to go. Take a step and hope it’s right. Left or right or roll the dice. When we find we’re in the place and time we want to be we’ll know because we’ll feel oooooooooooooo.

Happy Song 02:55
Let’s flirt with another Australian at the hostel. Let’s meet another American at the beach. Let’s chat with the English about where we’re going next – we’re going in circles, come on, let’s be brief, because all travel is selfish but that doesn’t mean it has to be a waste. Walking on the banks of the Seine; drinking on a boat on the Vltava again. We don’t have to think about the time of the train because if we miss this one it will come again. We’re having a good time! We’re having a really good time! We’re having a really, really, really good time! Something’s been blocking you from singing happy songs ‘cuz every time you try to write one, something goes wrong. Consider other opinions and state the other side; edit one more time just to make sure it’s not trite. Watch out for pitfalls that always make you angry. Some people like to sing with music that’s happy. Play another major chord. Plug in your nice shiny new keyboard. Turn up the reverb on that PA. We’ll play another song if that’s what you say. Play a happy song! Play a really happy song! Play a really, really, really happy song! Like: Do what you want. Don’t do what you don’t want. Do what you want and don’t do what you don’t want. Do what you want and don’t do what you don’t want.
